Buyers guide Golf in Cyprus Island News Land in Cyprus
Larnaca Limassol Nicosia Paphos

Welcome to Cyprus, one of the oldest civilisations of the world going back 10,000 years. Cyprus is the third largest island in the mediterranean, but due to its strategic position at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa, it has been vulnerable to attack. Throughout its history, Cyprus has had many foreign people on its soil, passing by or settling and has been the target of conquest and rule. Hyksos, the people of the sea, Phoenicians, Assyrians, Egyptians, Persians, Romans, Crusaders, Franks, Venetians, Turks and British have been some of these many occupants of its land. Famously, Richard the Lionheart took possession during 1191-92 marrying Berengaria of Naverre in Limassol where she was crowned Queen of England. Most recently, Turkey invaded Cyprus in 1974, and approximately 37% of the island is occupied, however since Cyprus entered the EU, a permanent resolution is imminent.

Apart from its vast history, Cyprus is richly known for its ancient Greek mythology and legends. Aphrodite the ancient Greek goddess of love and beauty was believed to have risen from the waves of the sea in Pafos by the rocks known as ‘Petra tou Romiou' and had taken her beauty baths in a pool of a natural grotto near Polis both of which can be visited today.

The people of Cyprus hold loyal to their cultural traditions of the past, of which many are still evident in its picturesque villages that surround the island. From Lefkara which is famously known for its making of silver and lacework, to Foini well known for its pottery.

Cyprus is an island that holds treasures of history and sites, from old Roman ruins and theatres, Byzantine churches and monasteries castles and forts, ancient monuments, artefacts to name but a few. The main beauty of the island however is within its natural being. From the many beaches, mountains, pine scented forests and valleys. Cyprus has natural beauty.

Cyprus beautifully blends old with new in an island of fast progression and development. Modern Cyprus today holds strong to both tradition, in keeping the islands identity, and modern, to meet with progression of todays living. It's cities are alive with a variety of restaurants, cafes, pubs, bars and clubs with great shopping stores and markets, to galleries, museums and cinemas. Organised events and festivals are held throughout the year like the well known twelve day wine festival in August to the amazing flower festival in May.

The island is surrounded with a variety of amazing beaches, pine-scented forest, and vast mountain areas and even has ski slopes on the snowy peaks of Troodos mountain. The island offers a healthy life style with its laid back people and clean living, an easier pace of life is set. From freshly grown goods, to its clean air, you are altogether healthier in mind and body.

Cyprus is an island that can meet everyones needs and interests and you can set your own pace of living. You can be swimming in the morning, walking through mountains in the afternoon, visiting an historical site by tea time, and be back in plenty of time by evening for a meal and show of your choice.
